Purpose of the Study: Technology has not only changed the everyday experience of most adults, it has also changed the culture of childhood. Digital apps, computer games, television media, electronic books and battery-operated toys have only increased in popularity in recent years. The purpose of this research question is twofold. First, we seek to characterize the use of both traditional and newer toys and media. We are interested in learning more about how today’s children spend their time and whether this changes with age. Second, we are interested in parent perceptions of both traditional and electronic forms of toys, books, and media. For instance, we are interested in parent perceptions of children’s cognitive and social development from traditional, hardbound books versus electronic books.
This parental questionnaire will ask about your child(ren)’s usage of both traditional and electronic/enhanced toys, books, and media.
Approximately 300 parents will participate in this series of studies. This involves a single, questionnaire which will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
Procedures to be Followed: You will be asked to fill out a brief survey (it will take approximately 20 minutes to complete). This survey is completely anonymous and your responses will be analyzed without any identifying information. The completed surveys and all data will be stored in a locked office on the campus of Penn State Brandywine. The survey will ask you basic demographic information, the amount of time both you and your child(ren) spend using different types of toys, books, and media, and finally, about your own perceptions of the benefits of these different types of toys, books, and media.
Benefits: Your participation will help to inform our understanding of children’s experiences in today’s technological world. This will help this research team, and others, to characterize children’s usage of technology and more traditional toys, books, and media and will help us to understand how parents perceive the benefits and risks of these different types of toys, books, and media. Parents, pediatricians, policy-makers, and educators may benefit from this increased knowledge. You will have the opportunity to enter a random drawing for a $50.00 Amazon.com gift card. The random drawing will occur at the completion of the study and you will be contacted if you are the winner.
Duration/Time: Completing this study will take approximately 20 minutes.
Statement of Confidentiality: Your participation in this research is confidential. The surveys will be stored in locked laboratory room at Penn State Brandywine. The data will be stored on password-protected computers. Your name or identifying information will not be used or stored in conjunction with your data. We ensure confidentiality to the degree permitted by the technology used. If you are submitting this survey via the internet or mailing the survey to the laboratory, we cannot guarantee against any the illegal interception of data.
